Orchids are found all over the world and they have very different requirements. An orchid that grows in a forest in Scandinavia will not appreciate the same environment as an orchid growing in hot and sunny Mexico. A lot of the most popular orchids in the floral trade hail from tropical and subtropical parts of the world, but there are many notable exceptions. Also keep in mind that an orchid species that has adapted to a life on high elevations in the tropics can be used to climate conditions that are actually more temperate or even sub arctic than tropical. As you can see, it is of imperative important to research the origin of each and every orchid species in your home or garden to find outs it exact requirements. Species from the same genus often have similar requirements, but be careful since even closely related species can have adapted to very dissimilar conditions in the wild. The immensely popular Phalaenopsis orchids are for instance native to a region that stretches throughout southeast Asia and northern Australia; a region which includes the harsh Himalayan mountains as well as the hot and humid islands of the Philippines. The recommended Phalaenopsis orchid care can therefore vary considerably from species to species.
