The possibility of owning really colourful and extravagant fish is one of the reasons why many people enter the aquarium hobby, but before you go out and simply purchase the most strikingly coloured fish you can find in the pet shop there are a few things to take into consideration. It is always recommended to research the fish that you’re interested in before you make a purchase, since different species have different requirements. Sometimes pet shop keepers tend to downplay the sensitivity of their species to sell more fish, so obtaining unbiased advice from several different sources is always a good idea.

There exists many different species of clown fish and what they all have in common is that they are marine creatures and need a saltwater aquarium to survive in captivity. You may think that simply adding some salt to a freshwater aquarium will do the trick, but the truth is that keeping a saltwater aquarium is a special branch of the hobby that requires specialized knowledge. One of the reasons why saltwater aquariums are so difficult to maintain is the fact that marine species, including the clown fish, are very sensitive to organic waste products and can die from levels that wouldn’t even bother a sturdy freshwater fish. If you want to keep colourful fish without having purchase all the expensive gadgets necessary to keep the water quality up in a saltwater aquarium you can for instance go for cichlids instead. There are a lot of colourful cichlids to choose among that can be successfully kept in freshwater aquariums or brackish conditions.
