Bananas
Banana trees are an excellent choice for gardens and indoor plant arrangements alike and will add an exotic flare to any location. Did you know that some banana tree plant varieties are amazingly cold tolerant and can be planted in gardens where the temperature drops far below the freezing point during the winter? With the right banana tree care, banana plants can flourish in most parts of the world as long as you pick the right variety and provide it with what it needs.
The banana tree is actually not a tree; it is an herb that is commonly referred to as a tree since it grows so big. As soon as the banana stem has flowered and produced a hand of bananas it will start to wilt and decay. When this happens, you can either let nature take its course or cut down the stem. Trying to save it will not help; it is genetically programmed to die after producing fruit. The good thing is that from the underground root – the rhizome – a new stem will soon grow. If you always want to have a stem going, you can let the rhizome produce three stems at different heights. One stem with bananas, one stem that is just ready to flower, and one stem that is still fairly small. Once you cut down the stem with bananas, the flowering stem will be ready to step in to its place and so on. This way, you can always have a beautiful banana tree in your house or garden.
